EastEnders’ stalwart Sonia Fowler might be on the brink of a steamy affair with a fellow Walford denizen.
The iconic character, played by Natalie Cassidy, has been through an emotional rollercoaster lately. Sonia and her beau Reiss Colwell (Jonny Freeman) have faced fertility challenges, opting for IVF after Reiss disclosed his inability to father children naturally.
Their previous IVF attempt ended in despair when Sonia discovered she had a blighted ovum, where the egg fails to develop into an embryo. Undeterred, they tried once more, and this week brought joy as Sonia learned she was expecting.
Yet, Reiss has been buckling under financial pressures recently. Viewers will remember that Reiss is still legally wed to comatose Debbie, who suffered a catastrophic stroke.
Initially, Reiss dipped into Debbie’s funds to cover the IVF costs, but with soaring care home fees, he began duping Sharon Watts (Letitia Dean) in a desperate bid for cash, reports the Daily Star.
In Wednesday’s episode (July 24), Sonia turned to her former flame Martin Fowler (James Bye) to confide about their fiscal woes.
However, it was Martin’s suggestive remark that set the rumour mill ablaze – fans are now buzzing over the prospect of a scandalous liaison. Sonia and Martin, who were once hitched in the early 2000s and share a daughter, Bex Fowler, still have a spark, it seems.
While unloading his van, Martin cheekily suggested to Sonia: “If you fancy a rendezvous.”
Although Sonia brushed off the flirtation, eagle-eyed viewers took to social media to speculate.
On a Facebook fan page, one viewer expressed: “I’m very excited at the prospect of Martin getting involved in this Sonia/Reiss storyline. But can she just cheat on Reiss with Martin already? “.
Another fan chimed in: “After Martin’s rendezvous comment I feel a Martin and Sonia affair is looming.”
While someone else pitched: “Hoping for a lot of Martin involvement, I can see romance blossoming again between him and Sonia though.”
