Coronation Street’s Luca Toolan speaks out on Mason’s shock return and teases how long he’ll be staying

It’s been three months since the teen was sent to the Young Offenders facility for threatening Liam Connor with a knife

Coronation Street star Luca Toolan has spoken about his return to the cobbles for the first time after it was revealed Mason Radcliffe will be released. It’s been three months since the teen was sent to the Young Offenders facility for threatening Liam Connor with a knife.

Viewers of the ITV soap were left devastated as they watch Liam become the victim of cruel Weatherfield High bully Mason and his group of mates – including Liam’s friend Dylan Wilson. It was during one of his horrific bullying sessions that Mason pulled a knife on the terrified teen.

There were then more heartbreaking scenes when the infuriating bullying campaign later resulted in the discovery that Liam was contemplating taking his own life, leaving his terrified mum, Maria Windass, watching her son’s every move, even going so far as to set up a camera in their home.

Liam, played by teen actor Charlie has since been undergoing counselling but it’s fair to say the family are still shaken by what has happened. And that’s only going to get worse as in upcoming episodes, Mason will be seen heading back to Weatherfield after serving his sentence.

Speaking to the Manchester Evening News on the red carpet at the RadioTimes.com Soap Awards, which were held at the Manchester’s Midland Hotel on Saturday night (July 12), Luca said of his return: “I always knew that I was coming back. It was a bit boring [being off]. It was two or three months of no filming. I was a bit gutted when they said there were no prison scenes.”

He added of being part of the popular soap: “It’s just so good to be back. I watched Corrie as a kid and it’s part of the fabric of Manchester. Just to be a small part of it is an honour, really. Even now, a year later, sometimes I pinch myself when I walk down the Street. It’s really good.”

But will viewers see a different Mason when he does return? “A little bit. Corrie haven’t been unrealistic. They’ve not turned him into an angel overnight. They’re more highlighting and playing the story of why Mason is the way he is…

“We’re witnessing Mason trying to fight against that and fight against the instincts that he’s had. It’s been really interesting to play and it’s stretched me as an actor as well. You’re playing a three-dimensional character, not just a bully. Hopefully, it should be interesting.”

Luca, however, wouldn’t be drawn on how long he’ll be staying in Corrie. The actor, who is the son of Hits Radio host Mike Toolan, commented: ” “I take it day by day! But [I’m back]
