DS Lisa Swain was seen in a tender moment with Underworld owner Carla Connor after months of build-up to a sweet romance – until Betsy dropped a bombshell.

Coronation Street viewers had their hopes crushed as Carla Connor’s next romance heats up.

Following her split from Peter Barlow, who left Weatherfield for a career at sea with his son Simon, Carla has been focusing on work. But on Friday (September 6) she found herself entangled with villain Joel Deering as she exposed him at the hotel.

Later, Joel turned up at the factory to threaten Carla, only to be interrupted by none other than Detective Sergeant Lisa Swain, who pulled the pair apart.

During a tender moment, Carla confessed her struggles to Lisa, admitting that between Peter leaving her and Jenny stealing her money, she’s having a tough time.

Lisa laid a gentle hand on Carla’s elbow, with the camera zooming in for a moment – that is, until her teen daughter Betsy wandered in and ruined the electric moment. Clearly sensing chemistry between the pair, Betsy ran off.

When Lisa found her later, she insisted: “I had my hand on Carla’s arm, it was a comforting hand! Carla’s straight!” – but Betsy isn’t so sure. She retorted: “Yeah, and so is spaghetti until you boil it!”

She branded her a “hard-faced cow” and let slip to her mum about the hit-and-run on the teen at the Precinct, which Carla caused. Looking shocked, Swain clearly didn’t know about the crime.

Fans were overjoyed at first to see romance finally heating up between the pair – but fumed Betsy had “ruined” it just as it was getting started. Turning to X to share their thoughts, one said: “Betsy is NOT Team Swarla!”

Another fumed: “Can’t believe Betsy just ruined what was gonne 100% be a moment there!” as a third social media user said: “Betsy nooo we deserved a long scene!” and a fourth fan echoed: “Great timing, Betsy. Great.”

Someone else got worked up as they penned: “Betsy thinks it was more than [friends] and so do we! Then to ruin any chance of a relationship the little brat tells her mum about Carla hitting a boy then driving off!”

But as Lisa is a police officer, she may be forced to turn Carla in for the hit-and-run, risking a prison sentence before anything can blossom between the pair.

Betsy’s words about Carla “replacing her mum” struck a chord with some fans, as one worried: “I think Betsy thinks Carla is trying to replace her other mum who died.”
