Bobby Davro issues cold EastEnders snub as he dismisses return to BBC soap

Speaking to GMB’s Ranvir Singh and Robert Rinder this Friday, comedian Bobby Davro was asked if he would ever return to EastEnders. But in a cold swipe, he dismissed the idea.

Walford has seen the last of Bobby Davro as the comedian has snubbed EastEnders.

The comedian, 65, was Ranvir Singh and Robert Rinder’s guest this Friday, July 26, 2024, on Good Morning Britain as he gears up for a show at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival on August 2.

During his chat with the TV stars, Bobby also gave an update on his health after suffering from a haemorrhagic stroke earlier this year and candidly opened up about his late fiancée, Vicky Wright, who passed away last year.

But the conversation inevitably took a turn as Robert Rinder asked him if he could ever reprise his role on the BBC One soap, 16 years after bowing out of the London-based drama.

“People will be cross if I don’t ask”, Robert first said, “might you go back to EastEnders?” The star’s response was categorical as he first appeared to tease: “I don’t know, maybe. Maybe next January”, before brutally adding: “it’s going to be a blinking cold day when I go back there.” And he quickly changed the subject, turning his attention back to the Edinburgh Fringe.

Shooting to fame in the 1980s through his appearance on Live from Her Majesty’s, Bobby joined the EastEnders line-up in 2007 as troublemaker Vinnie Monks. The character shared a complicated relationship with Albert Square stalwart Shirley Carter, played by Linda Henry, knocking her over with his car while she was on her way to court.

However, after a year in Walford and plenty of drama, Vinnie began to feel that his life in the Square was pointless, jumping on the opportunity to travel across the world in a vintage car. Seeing a newly single Shirley, he then offered her the same chance and the couple made their exit on December 1, 2008.

However, when Vinnie learned that Shirley and her latest ex-boyfriend Phil Mitchell (Steve McFadden) had tried to settle unfinished business with a one night stand, Vinnie encouraged her to stay in Albert Square, believing she would only be settling for second-best if they rekindled their own romance.

Vinnie was last seen driving off alone to catch a ferry to France but a brief mention of him was made later on when Callum was revealed to be living in Southend with him in 2009. Three years later, in 2012, Shirley called Vinnie after Phil was sent to prison and he’d agreed to send work over to Walford’s local car shop, The Arches.

But while Vinnie remained on good terms with Walford residents, Bobby was less than impressed with his own stint in EastEnders, later claiming that his character “wasn’t very good and they didn’t give me proper storylines”, according to Birmingham Live.
