BBC denies reports Casualty is ending

The BBC has denied reports that Casualty will be ending.

On Friday (March 8), The Sun reported that the Casualty cast and crew had been warned that the BBC was planning to end the show after its 40th season.

A spokesperson for the BBC has denied those claims, telling Digital Spy: “Casualty isn’t going anywhere, the latest recommission is simply part of the normal business cycle.”

We understand that Casualty has been on a traditional cycle of rolling commissions, so there’s been nothing unexpected about this latest renewal.

It was announced last year that Casualty would have a reduction in the total number of episodes produced for the 38th season, which is currently underway.

The continuing drama was off the air between mid-September through December to reflect this change in the production cycle.

There has understandably been concern about the future of continuing drama at the BBC, following Casualty‘s companion show Holby City being axed in 2022.

More recently, it was announced that Doctors was being decommissioned after 23 years on the air at the BBC.

The controversial axing has drawn widespread criticism, with cast and fans both campaigning for the series to be saved. A spokesperson for the show has since insisted Doctors‘ cancellation was “not based on low [viewing] figures”.
