BBC EastEnders cast lets slip secrets from 40th anniversary as ‘huge return looms’

Two EastEnders stars have revealed more about the 40th anniversary – amid hints of a huge return.

Emma Barton and Jamie Borthwick – who play Honey Mitchell and Jay Brown on the BBC soap – chatted with us about what fans can expect from the upcoming 40th anniversary, which will be airing in early 2025.

There has been much speculation about some big returns for the BBC soap’s anniversary – and with big names like Chrissie Watts and David Wicks already confirmed to return this year, there must be some even bigger names in the works for next year!

Speaking about what’s to come, Emma exclusively told The Mirror : “We just know Chris is going to have something very exciting planned as he always does. It is exciting. We’re all really proud we’re there and going to be a part of it.”

Jamie kept quiet about what fans could expect, quipping: “But we don’t know what it is! I think it’s so under lock and key that we don’t even know if those in the know, know! It’s under lock and key!”

Soap boss Chris Clenshaw told us recently that the soap had been dropping ” Easter eggs ” on who might return. He said: “The 40th has been in the works for quite some time. The nostalgic element means a lot.”

Dean Wicks star Matt di Angelo also told us there were “big surprises” in store. S peaking exclusively to The Mirror on the red carpet at the Radio Times Soap Awards when asked about the soap’s upcoming 40th anniversary, he teased: “I know quite a lot and I can’t tell you who exactly – but when I found out, I was very surprised that they would come back.”

Executive producer Chris Clenshaw – who facilitated the return of Cindy and Ian Beale – revealed: “It’s not just because of the lovely reaction. It all depends on the story and where the characters are. As we head towards our 40th year, it is the history of the show. I think the nostalgic element means a lot.
