Who is Sunetra Sarker: Why is Casualty and Loose Women star hosting Eurovision Welcomes the World

Actress Sunetra Sarker will be joining Rylan Clark as they both look back on the Eurovision Song Contest’s opening ceremony.

in BBC One’s Eurovision Welcomes the World, which airs at 6.30pm on Monday, May 8.

The hour-long show gives viewers the chance to get to know the acts competing to follow in 2022 Eurovision winner Kalush Orchestra’s footsteps. There will be music and jaw-dropping performances as Liverpool kicks off its Eurovision celebrations.

Liverpool-born Sunetra returns home for the event, which is being held in the UK for the first time since 1998.

Who is Sunetra Sarker?

49-year-old Sunetra is an actress best known for playing Dr Zoe Hanna in medical drama Casualty. She appeared in the BBC show between 2007-2018 and her character was a fan favourite, involved in several major storylines.

Over the course of her career Sunetra has also had roles in Brookside, Ackley Bridge and Doctor Who. In 2014 she took part in Strictly Come Dancing and was partnered with Brendan Cole. She is also a panellist on ITV lunchtime chat show Loose Women.

Sunetra and her ancestors were the subject of an episode of Who Do You Think You Are? in 2017 and traced them to Bengal. She visited her great-grandmother’s ancestral village where she discovered the story of how her family were caught up in the Bangladesh war of independence from Pakistan in 1971.

Sunetra married Nick Corfield in 2003 and they have a son, Noah, who was born in 2001. The pair divorced in 2009.

She is now married to Scott Carey, whom she has known since 1991. Eurovision Welcomes the World airs at 6.30pm on BBC One and BBC iPlayer on Monday, May 8.
