Virgin River brings big developments in season five, but does Mel lose Jack’s baby? Here are the spoilers!

Virgin River is a Netflix romantic drama series set in a small town with a close community of people intricately intertwined in each other’s lives.

Following Melinda “Mel” Monroe’s arrival in town as the new nurse at the doctor’s office, the series revolves heavily around the idyllic yet chaotic

romance between her and Jack Sheridan, the local bar owner. Throughout the series, the couple faces ups and downs, but arrives at a picturesque future in season five, living together in a romantic cabin and awaiting the birth of their daughter.

Due to the dense chronology of the series, as we leave the fourth season and enter the fifth, Mel is still in the first trimester of the pregnancy introduced in the third season. Considering Mel’s past medical complications and the general anxiety surrounding her situation, viewers should be curious to know how this plot plays out for her. Here are the SPOILERS!

Mel’s pregnancy in Virgin River

Before the events of the series, Mel goes through an exhausting journey in Los Angeles as she tries to have a baby with her husband, Mark. However, although she becomes pregnant, she loses the baby after a stillbirth. The tragedy has an adverse effect on Mel, which is only made worse by Mark’s death in a car accident for which Mel blames herself. So, in desperate need of a fresh start, Mel finds herself in the small town of Virgin River.

After meeting Jack, Mel finds a second chance at a happy ending. Overcoming the obstacles in their path, Jack and Mel begin season five in a happy place, eager to start a family together. In the previous season, Mel, aware of the high probability of risk of this pregnancy, fears that she had suffered a miscarriage on two separate occasions. However, she decides to keep a positive outlook on the experience and dares to hope for a bright future.

Mel always wanted to have children and continue her lineage. Because she lost her mother at a young age, part of her feels that motherhood will help her overcome her past traumas. Plus, by giving birth to a daughter, Mel hopes to find a glimpse of her mother in the baby, which will help her feel more connected to her parents.

Likewise, her daughter with Jack will mark the couple’s entry into parenthood, as they embark on a new adventure in their relationship. Ultimately, this pregnancy is one of the most significant moments in Mel’s life.

However, when devastating wildfires engulf the forest around Virgin River and its neighboring town, Grace Valley, emergency care becomes the priority. As a nurse, Mel has a responsibility to ensure people’s health and safety in this time of turmoil. Therefore, even though she left her job at Doc’s office, she returns immediately, aware that the team there needs her help.

Does Mel suffer a miscarriage and lose Jack’s baby in Season 5?

As expected, the large influx of patients begins to overwhelm Doc and Cameron, who are immensely grateful for Mel’s help. Chaos prevails as the fire approaches the city, destroying several homes and putting several lives in danger. Likewise, the clinic is facing a moment of frenzy never seen before. However, amid the incessant stream of patients, Mel realizes that something may be wrong with her own health.

Following this realization, Mel rushes to check on her baby via an ultrasound, only to find a devastating discovery. The ultrasound shows no signs of a fetal heartbeat, confirming that unfortunately Mel suffered a miscarriage and lost the baby.

The gravity of the situation shakes Mel, who secretly breaks down. Still, she does not wish to abandon her current situation and simply puts on a brave face, returning to her patients.

The loss is monumental for Mel, and although her initial reluctance to grieve is a result of the natural disaster, emotional barriers will eventually have to come down. However, when Mel faces the reality of this tragic incident, she will count on the love and support of her fiancé, Jack, and an entire community that loves and cares about her in Virgin River.
